Okay, so you are itching to do something else with your life but you can’t. Or at least you don’t think you are in the right place or that this is not the right time to take the plunge. Whatever your reason for delaying a change, there are several more even better reasons why you should just make that career change midway through your life.
It was not nearly as hard as I thought it would be when I did it. However, it was sure pretty scary at the time. I had a business that had been secure for a number of years, and then things went sideways. By the time we decided to just close the doors on what used to bring us security, it had long quit being all that secure to us. That’s why we did it. We didn’t really have a solid Plan B, but at least we had a Plan B. We thought we’d figure out the details after we were able to shrug off the stress and worry from the business we closed just about a year ago (July 2016). Here are my top 3 reasons for making a midlife career change. Maybe they will help you. 1 – Better/More Reliable Income A lot of the time a career change late in life happens when you’ve maxed out on how high you can climb the corporate ladder where you are. You know you have value, maybe your company sees that or maybe not. Sometimes a different company sees it instead. For us, we just needed a reliable income as our business was no longer taking care of itself and us anymore. 2 – Health Conditions For some, a midlife career change comes as a result of some kind of health-related incident. Maybe you’ve had an injury that has restricted what you can do or you have working conditions that are now causing you some kind of health risk. In our case, the stress was at a point where we lost sleep and worried too much. These are all signals for a change in your career. 3 – Personal Satisfaction There is nothing wrong with staying in the same job or career path for decades. If you love what you do, then you will stay happy. For many of us we end up making the midlife career change because we want more control over our future or just need to feel something good about working all day. Our lives changed for the better when we did it and they continue to improve. Does any of this sound familiar to you? Maybe you need to consider making a change and if you are 45+ this is the best time in your life to do so.
